Gallery I - Rudy Perez

In 1984 Rudy offered a performance workshop at the Los Angeles studio of multimedia artist Ulysses Jenkins. In attendance were visual artists Maren Hassinger, Senga Nengudi Fittz, May Sun, VinZula Kara, and myself. Two works developed in this workshop include May Sun’s Red Door, and a section of my dance work, Pearls of Obsidian, which premiered at the 1984 Olympic Arts Festival at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center’s Aratani Theatre. The photographs here presented were taken backstage during the 2012 performance event, Walking Tall, by Ulysses Jenkins; it brought these artists together again, including Rudy Perez for the Now Dig This!: Art and Black Los Angeles 1960–1980 at UCLA’s Hammer Museum. This was Rudy Perez’s last performance.
